SLC Purpose

Here at Spring Lake Church we have sought out God’s will for us, and we believe that God wants us to “become a people of Character with hearts for the world.” The idea here is that if we cooperate with God’s plan to conform us to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29), or in other words, if we develop Christlike character, we will be prepared for whatever challenges and purposes God has for us as people and as a church.

Just before the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War, Colonel Joshua Chamberlain told his men, “We know not of the future, and cannot plan for it much. But we can… determine and know what manner of men we will be whenever and wherever the hour strikes that calls us to noble action.”

Our goal at Spring Lake is to discover what manner of people God wants us to be and then live that out in the world.

Our ministry structures and strategies are designed around the belief that if we “Grow, Belong and Share,” God will develop Christlike character in us. When we grow in our faith, when we belong to God and each other, and when we share ourselves, our love for God and faith in Jesus to a struggling world, God works in us to change our character and make us progressively more like Christ. And so that’s we’re all about. We seek to love God with our hearts, souls, minds and strength and then take God’s love to our neighbors, and by doing that God transforms our character and makes us the kind of people that He can work through to change the world.

SLC Beliefs

We believe...

1) The Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of man, and divine and final authority for all Christian faith and life. (Psalm 1:1-6; 19:7-14; Matt. 5:18; Mark 12:36; John 10:35; 1 Cor. 2:10-13; 1 Tim. 1:5; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:20-21)

2) In one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Deut. 6:4; Psalm 90:2; Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14)

3) That Jesus Christ is the true God and true man having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where, at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He is now our High Priest and Advocate. (Matt. 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-35; John 1:1, 14; Rom. 3:21-26; 2 Cor. 5:21; Phil. 2:5-11; Heb. 1:1-4; 4:14-16; 1 John 2:1-2)

4) That the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, and during this age to convict men, regenerate the believing sinner, indwell, guide, and empower the believer for godly living and service. (John 3:5-7; 4:23-24; 16:8-11; Acts 1:8; Rom. 8:1-14; 1 Cor. 12:11-13, 20-31; 14:1-5, 26; Gal. 5:16-25; Eph. 1:13-14; 4:30; 5:18; Tit. 3:5-7)

5) That man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and is, therefore, lost and only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained. (Gen. 1:26-27; 3:6-7, 16-19; Psalms 8:1-9; 14:1-3; 51:5; Mark 7:20-23; Rom. 1:18-32; 3:23; 5:12-21; Eph. 2:1-3)

6) That the shed of blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all those who believe, and only such as receive Jesus Christ are born of the Holy Spirit and, thus, become children of God. (Matt. 28:19-20; John 3:16-18; 5:24; 10:27-30; Acts 1:8; Rom. 3:21-26; 6:1-23; 8:1, 28-39; 12:1-2; 2 Cor. 3:18; 5:17; Gal. 5:16-26; Eph. 2:8-10; 4:30; 1 Pet. 1:3-5; 1 John 5:11-13)

7) That water baptism and the Lord's Supper are the ordinances to be observed by the Church during the present age. They are, however, not regarded as means of salvation. (Matt. 28:19-20; Rom. 6:3-11; 12:3-8; 1 Cor. 11:23-28; 12:12-28)

8) That the true Church is composed of all such persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are united together in the body of Christ of which He is the Head. (Acts 1:5; 2:42; 11:15-16; 1 Peter 2:4-8; 1 Cor. 12:13)

9) That only those who are, thus, members of the true Church shall be eligible for membership in the local church. (Matt. 16:16-18; 1 Cor. 12:13)

10) That Jesus Christ is the Lord and Head of the Church and that every local church has the right under Christ to decide and govern it's own affairs. (Eph. 1:18-23; 4:1-16; 1 Peter 5:1-3)

11) In the personal, premillennial, and imminent coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and that this "Blessed Hope" has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer. (Ezek. 37:21-28; Zechariah 14:4-11; Luke 16:19-26; 23:43; John 5:28-29; Acts 1:11; Phil. 1:23; 1 Thess. 4:13-18; 2 Thess. 1:6-9; Titus 2:13; Rev. 20:1-15)

12) In the bodily resurrection of the dead; of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord; of the unbeliever to judgment and everlasting conscious punishment. (1 Cor. 15:50-58; Rev. 20:1-15; 2 Cor. 5:6-8)

SLC Core Values

1. BIBLICALLY FAITHFUL: The Bible is our final authority rather than church tradition. We seek to be innovative and flexible, while remaining true to the Bible's teachings.

2. GRACE BASED: We emphasize God's acceptance and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We attempt to motivate through love and thankfulness, not guilt and duty.

3. CULTURALLY RELEVANT: We try to use forms of communication, music and ministry that most effectively communicate the good news of Jesus Christ to Americans in the new Millennium.

4. SEEKER FRIENDLY: We want our church to be welcoming to those in our community who have not yet committed to Christ. Though our worship services are generally designed for the believer, we avoid language or forms that make seekers feel awkward or uninformed.

5. APPLICATION ORIENTED: We emphasize life-relevant issues in our preaching and small groups with a view to application in our day to day lives.

6. RELATIONALLY FOCUSED: We recognize and stress the need for healthy relationships. We emphasize small groups as a primary means for people to care for each other, develop friendships, and share their lives with each other.

7. PEOPLE DEVELOPING: We seek to help people grow spiritually. We provide biblical instruction on developing a relationship with Christ and we encourage believers to discover and exercise their spiritual gifts. We believe that every Christian is uniquely equipped by God to help others.

8. FAMILY AFFIRMING: We seek to provide an atmosphere which strengthens and affirms marriages, families and Singles. We are committed to strong youth, children's and Singles ministries.

9. GLOBALLY EFFECTIVE: We reach beyond our own church as we seek to have an effective impact on people of other cultures with the good news of Jesus Christ.
